Muladhara · Grounding · Foundation · Safety

Chakra 1 of 7

Root Chakra — Muladhara

The Root Chakra serves as your foundation, connecting you to the Earth and providing stability for all other chakras. When balanced, it creates a sense of safety, security, and belonging in the physical world.

Muladhara means 'root support' in Sanskrit. It is the first of the seven main chakras and governs our most primal needs — survival, safety, and our sense of belonging in the physical world.

Musical Note — C (Do)

The Root Chakra is associated with the musical note C — the first note of the scale, the foundation upon which all other notes are built. Just as C anchors the scale, the Root anchors your energy body.

Note C (Do)

The lowest and most grounding note of the solfège scale. Found in drumming, bass tones, and earth-resonant music.

How to Use

Hum or tone the note C during meditation. Play instruments tuned to C. Listen to music rooted in bass and rhythm.

Sacred Sound — LAM

LAM is the bija (seed) mantra of the Root Chakra. Bija mantras are single-syllable sounds that carry the vibrational essence of each chakra. Chanting LAM activates and balances Muladhara.

How to Chant

Sit comfortably with feet on the floor. Take a deep breath in, and on the exhale, slowly chant 'LAAAMMM.' Feel the vibration in your lower body and base of your spine.

When to Use

Morning grounding practice, before meditation, during moments of anxiety or fear, or anytime you need to feel more rooted and present.

The Color Red — Symbolism & Meaning

Red is the color of life force, primal energy, and survival. It is the densest and slowest vibrating color in the visible spectrum — perfectly aligned with the Root Chakra's earthly, physical nature.

In Nature

Fire, blood, ripe fruit, autumn leaves, red clay earth, red rock formations

In the World

Stop signs (alerting survival instincts), red lights, emergency vehicles — red commands attention and signals the body to respond

In the Body

Red stimulates circulation, raises energy, and activates the adrenal glands — our fight-or-flight response

For Healing

Wear red clothing, use red crystals, surround yourself with red flowers or decor when you need grounding and vitality

Core Themes — Root Chakra

The Root Chakra governs our most fundamental human needs. When these themes are in harmony, we feel safe, stable, and ready to grow.

🛡️ Survival

Basic needs — food, shelter, safety, warmth. The instinct to protect and sustain life.

🌍 Grounding

Connection to the physical body and the earth. Feeling present, embodied, and real.

🏠 Security

A sense of belonging — in your body, your home, your community, and the world.

🪨 Foundation

The stable base from which all other chakras grow. Without roots, nothing above can flourish.

Affirmations work by gently redirecting the nervous system toward safety. Repeat these slowly, with feeling — out loud if possible.

I am deeply rooted and grounded.

I trust in the process of life.

I have everything I need.

I am connected to the earth and all living things.

My body is my home and I am at peace here.

Physical Manifestations of Imbalance

The body speaks the language of the chakras. When the Root is out of balance, these physical signals may appear as gentle invitations to return to ground.

Lower back pain, sciatica, leg and knee issues, hip tightness

🫁 Digestive

Constipation, bloating, irritable bowel — the gut reflects our sense of safety

Energy

Chronic fatigue, low energy, weakened immune system, frequent illness
